Community Independent candidate for Dickson Ellie Smith has today pledged to fight for fair supermarket pricing as the next Member for Dickson, reversing years of inaction for fed-up consumers across the region.
Ellie Smith said:
“I spent years standing up for farmers in regional Queensland against big energy corporations - so I know how to fight alongside people for what’s right.
“Australian supermarkets have become the most profitable in the world.
“Their margins on everyday necessities are over the top and they’re banking excessive profits, at a time when many people are struggling to make ends meet.
“The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Inquiry into the supermarket sector in Australia was a thorough and comprehensive review.
“I support its recommendations. However, they are unlikely to significantly shift the dial in favour of consumers and fairer pricing.
“One of my first acts if elected to Parliament will be to get more power and dedicated resourcing to the ACCC, so it can increase its monitoring and action on unfair pricing in the supermarket sector.
“I will be calling out the supermarkets on their lack of transparency, unfair dealing with farmers and suppliers and high margins, particularly on staples like potatoes, apples and cucumbers.
“I will also work closely with consumer advocates to ensure that the supermarkets can no longer get away with unfair pricing that hurts consumers.
“I understand that the supermarkets need to be profitable. I also understand that they are an important employer in communities across Australia.
“However, they have lost the faith of consumers around the country. They need to show the community the steps they will take to deliver fair, transparent and reasonable pricing.”
